I checked in a change a couple of weeks ago that improved the speed of font
selection for non-ASCII character sets, but broke the font menus. I haven’t

This is a specific consequence of compiling without Mule. If you don’t mind
me asking, why are you compiling without Mule?

The reason why I don't compile with mule is because I would like to use
the x-symbol package, and I can't get it to load in a mule-enabled
xemacs. Instead, as soon as I open a .tex file the backtrace at the end
of this message. I don't understand what's going on, because I have
(setq x-symbol-default-coding 'iso-8859-1)
in my custom.el, and x-symbol works beautifully under xemacs without
mule. Unfortunately, x-symbol is not maintained, so unless somebody here
in the forum has any suggestions I am forced to choose between
x-symbol and mule.
Even in the mule-enabled xemacs (which I think I will eventually end up
using), I have experienced a couple of annoying problems with fonts and
the Font menu:
1) For some reason, the italic font associated to the default
Lucidatypewriter is way too small, and doesn't display accented letters
(essential for Spanish) properly.
2) When I try to change the default font to (say) Courier (the usual one
before this release), I get Courier in an enormous size that makes the
xemacs buffer fill the whole screen (on a 20" monitor!). The Font Size
menu does not work, and the new default font chosen does not stick after
xemacs is killed.
For the time being (until these problems are solved) I will probably
stick to the non-mule xemacs. Since the Font menu is not working there,
do you know of a way of changing the default font by a command-line
switch or Xdefault option (it's probably in the manual, but the only
thing I found there is how to change the window title and menu fonts).
