I can't comment on fink, but I have built XEmacs from sources on my mac,
using the X11 libraries. This all works. Mule works pretty well too.
And with the right set of fonts, display works pretty well too.
(I tried the Carbon version of XEmacs a while ago. It seemed to work,
but it's different enough from X11 that I can't get used to it. Too old
to change, I guess.)
