True, it doesn't actually disable the system packages. But when I want
to test a replacement for an installed package, I have found that
starting with -vanilla is sometimes a sufficient start. It gives me a
clean environment into which I can load the replacement. It *is* highly
manual, e.g., I'd have to load all the files in the package, or fiddle
with load-path.
