buffers tab does not appear

I have compiled XEmacs 21.4.8 by myself and it worked without errors. But since the first time I ran it the buffers tab does not appear. The menu option "Options/Display/Buffers Tab Visible" *is* checked. Previously I was using XEmacs 21.4.6 that came with Linux Mandrake 8.2 and the buffers tab was showing. Should I stay with this older version?
