Xft builds are known to have very slow redisplay (even on the local
display). I don't really know why; the documentation is pretty bad (I
guess they expect you to be using Pango or even gecko to manage text
display).
Sorry, I should have specified my configuation, shouldn't I?
I built without Xft - and the problem also appears on tty frames.
The config was
./configure --with-mule --with-athena=xaw --with-xim=xlib --with-mail-locking=lockf
--with-optimization --prefix=/home/jcb/local --without-debugging --without-error-checking
