This comes up elsewhere, see the thread "21.4.9 crash on red hat 7.X,
maybe ldap related". The OP there believes it's a local issue, I
suspect bad optimizations. This is a regressive situation with XEmacs
(and possibly GNU Emacs, too) because we abuse casts a lot in
production builds.
Try --use-union-type in .configure.

Aaargh. Please try to use -g builds. No -g/stripped executables mean
we haven't any idea what's going on unless we've seen a real backtrace
elsewhere.
