Tramp I don't know, but HTTP is definitely on my wishlist to
remove the EFS dependency and hairiness of ftp in general.
Me too. We're in the dark ages still using FTP.

This is the case for the vast majority of our package mirrors.
This is not a big issue. We just maintain a list of http and ftp mirrors,
not a big deal.
The important thing is not to have to *depend* on FTP. FTP is fragile,
often broken across firewalls, etc. There's a reason why every other
program in existence does it downloads by HTTP.
