Obviously a file-descriptor leak is a very bad thing in a text editor. What you suggest potentially creates such a leak. As I say, if someone who understands that code wants to work on it, it sounds like a good idea to me. But I don't qualify and the people who I know are interested in that kind of thing are not currently active, so the realistic answer is "probably not soon." What is your application?
