That was very much helpful. I could build 21.5.11
successfully with those flags. It seems that Motif
libraries/headers on Solaris 8 have some problems,
which need to be figured out.
Build crashed first but with subsequent gmake it was
able to compile. (I guess that one is known issue).

I've done that several times. However, I never use
Motif:
--with-scrollbars=lucid \
--with-menubars=lucid \
--with-dialogs=athena \
--with-widgets=athena \
--with-athena=xaw \
