The second argument (#<charset ascii ...> . initial) is correct
according to the API, so I assume the problem is with the patch. That
patch was always the wrong thing to do, and I have never promised to
maintain it.
I gave you a patch to x-symbol years ago that should have made
x-symbol work with an unpatched XEmacs. Maybe it's time for you to
dig that out and take fixing x-charset (which is abandoned as far as I
know, and so not a good reason to change XEmacs) seriously.
