The Auto* people regularly change the semantics of their macros to
enforce their ideas of what is appropriate usage. They made a raft of
incompatible changes between 2.13 and 2.50, and have made more in the
last few releases. They haven't tried to enforce the distinction
between --with and --enable so far, but I can easily see them doing it
by providing more features, specifically option validation, in the
default semantics of those macros.
But since I can't guess exactly what those features might be, it
probably doesn't save any work in the long run. It definitely reduces
confusion in the short run, so I guess you should go ahead.
