Not really. It can download your messages from the IMAP server but it
wants to keep them locally (unless something has really changed
lately). So the point of keeping your mails on the IMAP server is
somewhat lost.
It has been a long while since I used VM over imap (I use fetchmail
instead, dosen't cause XEmacs to pause) but I believe the
`vm-imap-auto-expunge-alist' allows you to keep the mail on the IMAP
server. I would test first before you irrevocably delete all your old
mail from the server.
