If so, why does it work perfectly well on Emacs 20.3?
The feeling I'm getting is that a whole lot of stuff broke in the
XEmacs reimplementation[1] of the Customize face support. Things are
initialized in the wrong sequence. MULE fonts are screwed. And now
this.
Will there be time for any hacking sessions in Japan? I think it
would be useful if some of us (you, me, Bill, Hjorve maybe) went
together to see what is happening, and what should be happening.

[1] The code I see here on the list doesn't look anything like what
is in the last unbundled version of custom. Which is in principle
good, because the unbundled code used the wrong APIs. But not so
good, when it doesn't work.
