M-x shell works fine, as does eshell, but neither does full terminal
emulation.

Programs like top, tree & so on that use cursor positioning and color;
also color ls &c.
Note that shell-mode can handle colour via ansi-color.el (from the
text-modes package); use ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on to enable it.
