Thanks for writing this up!
Here's an ideas I'd be thrilled to mentor:
Port the lexical-scope support from GNU Emacs.
This would also make porting future packages much easier.
Also, I think the "porting" items may not be enough individually, but we
could lump them together under "Port popular packages from GNU Emacs".
(I'd personally add "port SMIE".)
