 gcc 2.96 has caused problems before.  (Doesn't that "-85" make your
 skin crawl?)  I would recommend using a different version if you can
 as a workaround. 
Yea. The compilation succeeded with the kgcc compiler included. That "-85" 
is not the compiler in stock RH 7.1, it's an update.
kgcc -v:

One probably should send a bug report to Red Hat...
