Thanks for the report. I hope Aidan will get to this quickly; as you
suggest in a later post, it looks like he failed to use appropriate
access macros somewhere.

Yikes! Where did you get those from? I don't recall pushing those
features into public view....
I suspect I added them with Xft. Is it possible that you could have
mentioned these options when you first announced the beginnings of Xft
support? I often try adding configure options as a way of finding bugs
in XEmacs so they can be fixed. Since I use the beta build running all
the time, I figure that the developers will have at least one end-user
report about broken new features.
