It did exist (due to the earlier installation attempt) and after I
deleted it, `make' went through just fine! Whee! _However_, when
I tried to install with `make install', I got exactly the same
errors again. It seems that `make install' creates those
destination directories, including the mentioned one, before
update-elc.el is used and thus the directory exists again when it
shouldn't. That is, output from `make install':
