snapshot tarball, but that went away for some reason. I suppose he

Ben agrees that's ugly. I don't understand the macros involved well
enough to be willing to change it at this point. The REGEX_MALLOC_OK
macros just set and reset a flag, and the END version leaves it safely
"off".
