I tried the extension "Edit with Emacs" and it adds an edit
button
close to the textarea. Maybe that is more in line with what you
want!?
That's the extension that totally fouled up my key bindings in a lot
of places, such as in Google Drive documents, and also in Google+.
I don't have any idea what the conflict was, but in some cases I
couldn't type anything at all, but could only click the Edit button.
