AFAIK most Unix platforms do have xpdf somewhere.
There's also gnome-open(1) but IIRC it didn't work for me.
Right. I put in things that *I* tested, and I suspect that there are
probably still more users of XEmacs on non-Linux platforms (eg,
Windows) than on Linux. I'll add "see" and "gnome-open" as
choices in
the next version, but defaults are hard to get right, and can do harm
(eg, to my free time) if wrong.
Also: Why give the user a choice of ODT or PDF?
Because it's there. If there's strong preference among users for PDF
(or HTML, when we get around to adding it), we can default to that
then. So far the vote is PDF 2, ODP 0. That's not a quorum.<wink>
If they really need the ODT maybe they can look on disk
Why should they, when XEmacs already knows where it is? Uncluttering
the menu is one thing (there could be yet another level, with an "Other
Formats" submenu). But making users work unnecessarily is uncool.
or, if you feel it's important, you could add an option
for ESC 1 M-x guided-tour to open it.
M-x guided-tour already prompts for format and part. Those can be
defaulted appropriately later (in particular, `guided-tour' should
remember the previous format, and also increment the part by default).
But I expect that most users will find it in the Help menu.
