I only recently began programming shell scripts under BSD (maybe
three years). �I used to do a lot of VMS DCL scripting.
LOL thunk (me falling off chair). So did I about six years ago! DCL was a great language.
The only problem I ever had with it was not being able to (easily) pipe commands from one
to the other. I guess if you ran Open VMS, you got that. And I remember with fondness the
symbol tables - system,user,process and job. Imagine being able to define an envar in a
child process and have it be available in other processes! And not having to muck around
too hard to get functions to be defined in subshells. Sigh.
Ok, this part of the thread is probably now OT. Robert, if you wish to continue on about
DCL, let's do so privately.
