I had it wrong then... It guess the fork has already happened, and
the free side of the tree is in the XFree86 camp.
There isn't much of a `fork'. X11R6.4 isn't free, but then there are
enough people still using R5, so it's not exactly as if R6.3 is a
legacy system.
The only way in which the XFree86 version is likely to diverge from
the Closed Group's version is in the absence of new extensions. It's
inconceivable that anything is going to happen to change existing
behaviour.
