Yes, I'm on Snow Leopard and using XQuartz 2.5.1 (xorg-server 1.8.2).

Right, that's what I'd like. Or better yet, something that gets
hooked on Mac OS X at initialization.
The part I'd like is where Mac Ports users don't have to do anything and it just
works. :-) I'm definitely seeing this as a Mac Ports bug right now -- if I use the
right X11 library then it works, but MacPorts compiles their own libX11 into it, it looks
like.

I don't feel like it! I can write programs, but not LISP programs. :-)
If "text editor" is what you want, it should be possible
for us to give
you one that exceeds expectations in almost all ways (modulo
proprietary dehancements... :-).
Awesome! I use xemacs because it's the best combination of powerful and user-friendly
X11 editor that I know of, with both mouse control and keystroke control.
