It does. The next thing I need to do is support font-preference-by-
character-set (Mule charset, FC language, FC charset, query font for
character set, probably in that order).

Damned if I know. Let's add the freetype and Xft manuals to the
general-docs package.

X11's XLFD standard specifies that font names are in Latin 1, less the
wildcards (* and ?). Ie, control characters are not legal. I
wouldn't be surprised if Xft has chosen to inherit that restriction to
avoid frightening the server, which _will_ typically end up having to
(try to) parse FC font names (even though it typically won't find them).
