Does anybody have a list of packages that are current and which are
needing updated?
No.
However, you should look at the list in MAINTAINERS before doing
significant work on a package, and if an individual is listed, you
should consult with him first (he's boss).
Also, what does updating a package mean?
Or maybe I should ask what is involved in updating a package?
Usually a sync to the GNU version, or a third-party package. It's OK
if the sync is partial, but if that's the case we ask that the synced
parts be marked so later workers can concentrate on the parts that
still need update.
Are we updating them to be the same as a similar emacs package or
are we updating them by fixing known problems? or what?
Fixing known problems would be called "fixing known problems" or
"maintenance". "Updating" implies a newer version is available.
