I don’t think Xft is good enough to be made the default, specifically its
Mule support (no real logic to match non-ASCII character sets to fonts,
apart from the hard-coded support for Japanese) and its performance. X11.app
appears to do double buffering unconditionally, or something similarly
performance-enhancing--while there is visible flicker with Xft XEmacs while
using it, it can be much worse with other X11 implementations, in my
experience.
I don't want to get in the middle of this, but there are two interesting
points here from my perspective. 1. I have not been able to build an
Xft xemacs-beta under Solaris 9 yet. Maybe, I should put my butt in
gear and submit a problem or a patch, huh? 2. I thought the flicker
under X11.app was just something that only I was suffering with. I'm
using Carbon XEmacs, is that an Xft build? Currently, the patch appears
to be offline and I can't seem to find it right now. In any case, if we
can get rid of this flicker it would be great since it is very annoying
and it only seems to be an XEmacs problem. Another problem report I
suppose, but I'm guessing that you guys don't support Carbon XEmacs
anyways.
Thanks,
Rodney
