I agree. Uwe use the first version of the package Makefile. That will
work fine for builds that starts from a clean state e.g. after make
clean, and is thus safe. Specifically it will not break the smoketest
since it always starts by doing a clean.
We can then look at getting to the state of perfection while the package
is in the repository. It will be easier then.
