Me as well, but if people want the feature and supply relatively clean
patches, I don't think we should keep it out. The patch seems
surprisingly small to me.
but what do other people think of the feature? I would like to
remove the
statics and put them on the frame or device structure...

I cannot judge how good the GTK code fit is, but the lisp interface
needs a bit more work, in particular they should be specifiers not
normal variables.

P.S. Mr-Abstraction in me thinks it really should be a special value
of the face-background-pixmap face property, but I would be happy with
just plain specifiers.
