Every line in php-mode.el ended in ^M. Once I removed all of the
^M's, php-mode.el byte-compiled fine.

OK, I've discovered something weird. While trying to track this down,
I edited php-mode.el with a non-Mule XEmacs. When I saved the file it
asked me if I wanted to save it as a "plain" file. What's that all
about?
I answered 'y'. After that php-mode.el byte-compiled OK. Even
without my patch to "fix" the problem.
I'm very confused. Can anyone tell me what is happening here?
Vin, try editing php-mode.el (make a tiny change to a comment or
something) in a non-Mule XEmacs and save it. Will it byte-compile
now?
