Since you've configured with xft, we should figure out why
fc-name-unparse doesn't seem to exist for you. Using Aidan's code to
set up fonts for xft has fixed most of the font issues I've had.
(I've had to tweak it a bit on Ubuntu because some fonts were coming
up too big. On Mac, however, I haven't really had to do any
additional twaks.)
