This looks similar to a problem I've been having. It appears to be
down to the modeline string getting corrupted on tty's if you have an
X11 frame open, and the X11 modeline is not pure text.
Could you try compiling --with-xpm=no and see if that helps? (or not
loading display-time, if you are loading it).
