I've seen that too, but it's a different issue because I'm not even
*using* gutters. (I have both fancy progress meter and buffer tabs
turned off.)
For me a good proof of the gutter slowness remains the unusable
Edit-Find dialog box.
On another note, I'm not using any of the lazy-* things because I
never needed them. font-lock has always been fast enough for me, even
on machines much slower than the one I'm using now. We should be
careful not to ruin it -- all the lazy-* things are optimizations that
come with a price.
