It's nice to have, especially on Unix where it implies universal
newlines. You also get access to some commonly used non-ASCII
characters (EURO SIGN, directed quotation marks) that aren't in Latin
1, and many (ELLIPSIS, INTEGRAL SIGN) that aren't even in Windows-125X
non-standards.

Yeah, I've always wanted to do something about this. The problem (as
usual) is Windows and/or Windows-thinking. On a sufficiently slow
connection you can watch the Emacs window on a buffer refresh many
times for edits at the top.
