I agree with you, and it's a pity. The risk of "making major changes
again" is *exactly* what pissed me off and made me rant once more last time.
I don't think anything we could do with the package system would
equal the FSF's first few releases of 20.x, which broke the
world. So label 21.0 as experimenal and cut yourselves some
slack. This is a hard problem; don't expect to get it right the
first time or the fifth. Just keep at it.
If it's any consolation, packages are easy to install right not,
without the fancy interface. All the user really needs to know
is what to download and where to unpack the tar file. Just this
is a big impovement over what we had before. Keep this in mind
as we start applying the lash to ourselves again.
