Isn't there something called the X Printing Library?
Yes, libXp is the "X Print Service Extension Library". It's a part
of X11R6.?, and is a way of making a printer look just like an X
screen/display/window. It's present on Linux, FreeBSD, HP-UX, and other
platforms (but not Solaris or AIX, for some reason -- maybe it's too
new?). If you're interested, you can check out the XFree86
sources/docs.
