Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. If you're running recent Red Hat, nscd
is broken; starting it implicitly via one of the get* calls invariably
wedges it. The solution is to run it by hand as root (I think you can
do this with a startup script). This breakage is not reproducible on
non-Red Hat systems.
It could be that Jan doesn't use very many apps which operate offline,
and that's why the symptom only shows up with XEmacs.
