I haven't had time to get to this yet (this is only an issue at home), but I
think I'll be able to try it tonight.
Yes, I'm behind a firewall (at home), blocking incoming traffic (not
outgoing).

David, are you behind a firewall by any chance?
I think if you
(setq efs-use-passive-mode t)
Your problems hopefully will go away.
