Confirming Stephen's suspicion, I'm pretty sure the problem is
with-xim=motif. Setting with-xim=xlib makes xemacs behave nicely. I
applied all 5 patches from www.openmotif.org, but it doesn't seem to
make a difference. I guess the next step is -g Xt and Xm libraries.
But not till next year ;-)
