M-x c u s t o m i z e - f a c e RET s h e l l - SPC
to get completions for the list of supported shell faces
shell-prompt-face
and
shell-option-face
may be useful to you.
Thank you for the suggestion. I'm afraid I have to report that setting
the forground color on those faces doesn't have any effect on text in
shell mode. I also tried setting the color of other shell-* faces,
but nothing changed. (I was hitting "Set" and "Save" to save the
changes.)
I tried starting a new shell, and even a new xemacs, but that didn't
help.
