Well, the REGEX_MALLOC thing did the trick, so I'll wait until there's some
other reason to move 21.14.14 (next time I wipe my hard disk, whatever :-)

As Stephen said, the 21.4.14 configure code is supposed to turn on
REGEX_MALLOC turned on by default. When you get a chance, please be
sure to let us know if 21.4.14 works by default for you.
