Pardon me for entering the fray... But, I would stay away from SXEmacs.
It doesn't support Windows (which I don't care about) and it doesn't
really support Unix either (especially Solaris and OS X, which I do care
about). It's pretty much a Linux-only adventure at this point despite
claims to the contrary.
My advice to Julian would be just to fork 21.4. It is not changing
much right now anyways. So, this might be a good jumping off point.
Just please tell me that you will really support Unix :o)
