Ha! C++ and XEmacs is my daily life!
I think it would be quite helpful to start with dabbrev-completion,
and do a little semantic filtering or ordering on the buffers to
search and on the local syntax, even as local as the preceding
token.
Yes, I use many different techniques to get around, but proper
intellisense would not hurt. I'm not going to start anything more
ambitious in this area. My negative attitude against what is possible
or not makes that impossible. ;-)
Getting the programming support modes that are available to GNU is as
far as I want to go now.
