Does "special" mean "non-ASCII"?
What is your LANG variable? Are you using an ISO 8859/15 (Euro) or
Unicode locale?
I suspect that what is happening is that Customize does not properly
handle changing ISO 8859/15 fonts, while the ASCII characters are done
in an ISO 8859/1 font.
