German umlauts shown as double width when (set-language-environment "Japanese")

See the two attached screen shots and the attached test file. xemacs-language-environment-japanese-file-containing-german-and-japanese.png shows XEmacs when the test file has been loaded after (set-language-environment "Japanese") The German umlauts are displayed as double width (very ugly), the Euro character as single width. xemacs-language-environment-english-file-containing-german-and-japanese.png shows the same test file after (set-language-environment "English") The Japanese is displayed badly with different fonts now. I don't want that of course, therefore I use (set-language-environment "Japanese") but then I get the silly double width umlauts. Is it possible to avoid that?
