(1) RBLs suck. They're about "guilty until proven innocent." I've
been RBL'd twice (not by the real RBL, but by one of the more
aggressive wannabes) on the basis (apparently) of forged Received
headers. AFAICT most spam comes from dialup/DSL addresses anyway,
which means that you either ban whole netblocks or you can't do much
with them except prevent the legit user who gets assigned that IP next
from sending us mail.
(2) RBLs suck bandwidth like crazy, and chew up CPU cycles and memory
blocking until they return. Neither of these is polite to our host.
In general, we have to think of ourselves as a common carrier. We
should not do many things that are perfectly reasonable for an
individual user.
