I cannot reproduce this error. I tried with both 21.4 and 21.5. In
both cases, the letter a was echoed back to me.
As with the comint-interrupt-subjob problem, would you please use M-x
report-emacs-bug so we can see what kind of system you are using, and
also tell us about your modifications to comint.el and/or shell.el so we
can see if those have an impact on the problem you are having.
