I haven't seen the problem since I installed dired-1.11-pkg.tar.gz.
Go figure. :-)
I'm using 1.11 dired package - sorry, should have said so to begin with...
To get unaligned
M-x dired (anything)
s (dired-sort-toggle-or-edit)
Then do something that creates a file in the directory - like M-x copy-file.
