I'm sorry but I'm trying to understand what installation process you
want to be simplified. This thread started out from configuring the
XEmacs binary from source but was also related to installing the
package sumo. Is it one or the other or the combo you are thinking
about?

Hi Mats,
should you are going to address the matter, probably starting with
common users --not developers-- install process pays again most.
First let's define the goal.
I'd say, there must not be more required than "./configure" and
"make"
after download in order to get a full working XEmacs.
"Packages" are nice, but not to deal with at the beginning. The basics
--including dired-- must be present without fuss.
A good portion to code yet AFAIS :)
looking forward,
Andreas
