Have you looked at the gnutls support in Emacs? Is it worth porting?

not sure how its done legally, but a lot of GPL programs such as esmtp are
linked to OpenSSL even in Fedora.
Gnutls appears slightly more high level, the code to do certificate cheking
tends to be more compact.
